Mocassins - Mocassins

A Untitled

Plain black cassette, comes in a clear jewel case with a dried skeleton leaf which serves as the cover.
Mocassins is handwritten onto the tape shell and scribbled over with black markerpen making the text almost undecipherable, no other identifying information is given on the release apart from maybe the fact that the cassettes were released on an uncommon brand of tape where the length is written on the side of the shell rather than the top.

I picked this little gem up in my local record store for only £4, it was found in a pile of mostly anonymous noise tapes with strange handmade covers. There was absolutely no information given on this tape and it took a while for me to eventually track down who the artist was, but that was only half of the fun. Luckily there were little clues on the other tapes which lead me to look in the right areas. As for the music, there is an overall dark atmosphere about it. The tape starts out with drones, tape manipulations, field recordings and further into the tape there are folk elements starting to appear with acoustic guitar, singing and other instruments. The droning then stops and the song becomes stripped down of its dark atmosphere and steps into the light with a really quite beautiful folk passage, but that is only for a short moment before everything turns dark again. The contrast of the drones with the field recordings remind me of being in the shadows of towering trees with shards of sunlight peeking through, I can also hear birds singing as well as the wind blowing across the microphone. The drone sound which is prominent throughout the piece sounds as though it is coming from some sort machinery or a mill in the middle of a forest, although it is probably more than likely just guitar feedback. The tape cuts off abruptly leaving me in a state of bewilderment and awe.I recommend this tape to the people who enjoy xiphiidae, pan to scratch and the like I doubt you can buy this anywhere for £4 but it is worth keeping it in mind if you do happen to see one. This is definitely one the most unusual and best finds I’ve happened upon.
