The Super Audio CD is much easier on the ears when comparing to the CD, nothing to do witih the format although definitely great they used the original analog stereo master to create the DSD master from, but everything to do wtih the mastering for this release. Around 4dB headroom on average on each track and 3~5dB more dynamic range vs. the CD, Transatlanticism suffers "loudness wars" mastering on the CD version (not as bad as Kintsugi or Thank You For Today) that is almost completely alleviated on the SACD. It scores a DR10, better than any other DCFC release as far as dynamics go.Shame they didn't get KG to master the SACD as I expect it would be even better, but this is definitely the go to version of Transatlanticism. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers for one of the 2LP versions but he used the DSD files, so here you're getting the source files the vinyl lacquers were cut from. How about that? =D(Confirmed by Chris Walla, who is a bit of an audiophile himself)
On the back it says it's an SACD, same for anyone else?
The 2 best songs on this album were the only 2 written by the whole band, everything else (other than Transatlanticism - WOAH) is generic DCFC, which means 'meh' IMHO.
Surface noise, more surface noise, and more surface noise. Cleaned with a Spin-Clean and brushed before playing. Vintage Technics gear with upgraded stylus, etc.
Throw her heart
People aren’t lying, I almost spent the cash for the 2003 US press but this German pressing is fantastic sounding.
This pressing sounds really good. I recommend getting this over the 2013 pressing.
My pressing sounds amazing! Played on a Pro-ject Debut Carbon DC (2M-Red) without any problems.
Phenomenal pressing and overall product. My copy (purchased Jan. 2018) doesn't have any of the issues some others have experienced. Across all four sides there's only a few noticeable pops, mostly on side D. The tracks are mastered nicely but are a bit loud. The included sleeves are plastic-lined to protect the discs, something I have rarely seen. Lyric/artwork book is a nice addition to the overall presentation and the download card seems to actually be a sticker as well. Overall, this was a great value for the money and a very welcome addition to my collection!
Little bit loud but 3~4dB more dynamic range than the CD version. The vinyl was cut from the DSD files mastered by Ed Brooks. So you can get the source files for the vinyl cut for about $25.
Mine came in a loose shrink wrap and a transparent hype sticker. Brought from Amazon US.
Mine plays well without any issues.. Great detail in the instruments Overall good pressing
Wasn't this repressed by GHvC as well? But maybe I'm mixing it up with the American 2013 pressing in my mind.
Just grabbed one brand new and Side A skips from the start. Such a bummer, was really stoked to have this
This pressing runs a bit 'hot' at points (Lightness, Tiny Vessels, possibly others) and I've read the mastering is a bit off on other presses so could be the master. But otherwise great, full sounding record.
I'm playing the 2013 (?) pressing on a brand new ortofon 2m bronze and reckon I've got the same issue, just a little, on Lightness, and again in the left channel of Tiny Vessels now and then during the verse vocals. It's not a bad cut overall, though, by any stretch.Edit: just spotted the SBR code in the 2013 deadwax, so the reissue comes from the same plates - no wonder it has the same distortion! It's minor, though, as I said.
Never noticed that on mine. Maybe I'll have a more careful listen since it's been quite a while, but never have had anything but love for this pressing through the years.
Purchased 11/2015. Record plays flawlessly and sounds great; very fat and warm with decent detail. My only gripe with this pressing is that it was mastered a bit too loud for my tastes and the dynamics suffer as a result. I'm not sure if they are still churning these out but the issues others have previously reported are not present in my copy (skipping, surface scratches from factory, off center labels, etc.)
This is the best pressing of this album, IMO. Very clean and quiet.
Pretty curious, i've ordered this album from Amazon and it sounds superb! (louder with a little bit of surface noise but nothing annoying). Played with an Audiotechnica AT-LP60 and Pro-ject Debut Carbon DC (2M-Red) without skips.
Lots of Amazon reviews saying the same thing: http://www.amazon.com/Transatlanticism-10th-Anniversary-Vinyl-Edition/product-reviews/B00EYRWVPC/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewopt_sr?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1&sortBy=helpful&reviewerType=all_reviews&formatType=all_formats&filterByStar=one_star&pageNumber=1&filterByKeyword=skip
Is this the box set that includes the demos?
This is not the barsuk box version, no. this is the SonicBoom pressing. SonicBoom logo is found on back of jacket, bottom, middle.
Does anyone know if there were any pressing errors on this? I just opened a sealed copy and it has multiple skips, but no visible scratches or marks.
My copy doesn't skip but often sounds distorted.
Yeah my pressing has errors too. But many other people do as well from what I've heard.
from earth
Mine skips all the way through both sides of the first record :( I've heard lots of people complaining of the same thing on Amazon.
I heard there were a bunch of issues with the box sets (off-center labels, etc), but I haven't heard anything specific about the individual re-press. Aside from a small skip at the beginning of side A (due to user error) my copy sounds great. It may be worth contacting Barsuk or the distributor you purchased from.
