The album from which this single derives, Slow Buildings, gets short shrift from Pale Saints hardliners who decry the absence of founding member Ian Masters. To those critical, I say phooey; a thousand times phooey. Masters penned some great material, no doubt, but compared to the insanely ethereal vocals of Meriel Barham, his shit doesn't add up to limp linguine. Fine Friend is three minutes and change of pure pop perfection, with two (count 'em!) two moments of shoegaze guitar orgasm that rip through the song's versus and propel proceedings into the chorus and gorgeously extended coda. Plus, the video is 90s-tastic, with Meriel rocking the X-girl garb, skate shoes and bleach-blonde hair. There's an oversized bowl of sugar cubes and gigantic dice, because, why the fuck not?
